California : Mapping the Golden State Through History - Rare and Unusual Maps from the Library of Congress

The Globe Pequot Press is proud to announce the first series to assemble - in full colour, state-by-state - an in-depth collection of rare, gloriously detailed, and historically significant maps of the cities, states, counties, towns, and events that make up each of our fifty states. Produced in collaboration with the Library of Congress and edited by renowned photo editor and author Vincent Virga, these books offer a glimpse into the history of the United States through the maps and their narrative captions, as well as compelling historical essays by local writers. Each volume brings together fifty beautiful and diverse maps of the given state from the collections of the Library of Congress. The maps come from various periods of the nation's history - from colonial America to the Revolution, from the Civil War to Westward expansion-with some from legendary expeditions. A choice selection of modern maps depicting birds-eye views of towns and cities is also included.

Ray Jones is the author or coauthor of numerous books on history and travel, including Lighthouses of California and American Lighthouses (both Globe Pequot). He lives in Pebble Beach, California.

 

Vincent Virga has been called “America’s foremost picture editor.” He is the coauthor of Eyes of the Nation and the author of Cartographia: Mapping Civilizations, produced in cooperation with the Library of Congress. He lives in Washington, D.C.
