The islands and seascapes gracing the Caribbean Sea have long been areas of interest and research for geographers and other scholars from around the world. More than beautiful beaches and fun places in the sun, though certainly they are just that, the lands and waters of the Caribbean region have stimulated an extensive body of research and writing across the many fields of geography. It is the intension of this compendium to collect, organize, and present as many of these scholarly publications as possible to aid in the teaching, study, and further scholarship of the geography of this area. There are seven chapters that the entries noted herein are organized into. These are: General Works, Cultural and Social Geography, Economic Geography, Historical Geography, Physical Geography, Political Geography, and Urban Geography. The types of publications noted include atlases, books, chapters of books, articles from scholarly journals, master's theses, and doctoral dissertations. A majority of these are written in English, but there are also works written in French, German, Spanish, Dutch, and other languages. These often have been translated into English, and the original languages are noted within these citations. Entries in each chapter are arranged alphabetically by author's last name. Where there is more than one publication per author, the earliest is listed first, and the rest are listed chronologically after the first entry. While the totality of entries listed here represents probably the vast majority of research and published works done by geographers on the various aspects of the geographical study of the Caribbean region, it is also probable that something has been missed. This is the responsibility of the author and not the publisher. It is hoped that two major types of services are provided for the users of this volume. The first, and most obvious, is that this is a convenient and useful collection of existing references on the geography of the Caribbean region that can assist teachers and students in both the study and research of the area. The second service is to provide an image of what has not been studied and published on the many varied aspects of the region's geographies. Such knowledge could hopefully encourage more efforts by geographers to further our knowledge and understanding of the broader Caribbean region's dynamic geography.
