Letters to Toutouche, written between 1928 and 1937, is a testimony of the way Cuban novelist, narrator, musicologist and journalist Alejo Carpentier communicated with his mother while he was studying in Paris. The book includes some 138 letters, cards, and other documents Carpentier sent to his mother; the voice of this relevant novelist can even be heard while reading through these letters; who he missed his mother, his everyday vicissitudes, and the creation of his intellectual personality. This book presents a partial testimony of the young Alejo Carpentier's training during his decisive stay in Paris, and also reveals intimate aspects of the formation of his personality.
