Addison Irving Bacheller (1859-1950) was an American journalist and author who founded the first modern newspaper syndicate in the United States. It was through the Bacheller Syndicate that American readers were brought the writings of British authors such as Joseph Conrad, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Rudyard Kipling. Bacheller's own novels are primarily concerned with early American life in the North Country of New York State. His first novel, The Master of Silence, was published in 1892. In 1900 his novel Eben Holden, A Tale of the North Country, proved a major success. According to the New York Times it was the 4th best-selling novel in the United States that year. His next novel, D'ri and I (1901) was 10th, The Light in the Clearing (1917) was 2nd, and A Man for the Ages (1919) was 5th.
