Lemon, an eccentric and compulsive recluse, learns his estranged, Vietnam vet father is ill. The news forces him to reconnect with relatives and uncomfortable stories from his childhood. Becoming more aware of his father's past and looming death, Lemon grows bolder and decides to reclaim his job as editor of the small town paper, the New Hamilton Daily. In doing so, he inadvertently starts a relationship with the owner's youngest daughter, Natalie, a very inexperienced reporter. In an attempt to keep her from returning to college, he has her investigate a story involving the town's church, which burned down years prior. The story introduces Lemon to the possibility of miracles, God, and the afterlife, all of which leave him contemplating the little time he has left with his ailing father.
