This is the history of that music and the dozens of black artists who congregated on the South and Near West Sides. All of the giants played throughout the city and created a musical style that had imitators and influence all over the world.

Mike Rowe, a noted British blues historian, here places the growth of the music within the matrix of the city. Names of long-forgotten clubs, the pioneer record companies, and neglected singers and guitarists fill many gaps in the history of the period. Portraits of such powerful figures as the Chess brothers, Willie Dixon, Vivian Carter, and Jimmy Bracken amplify the comments of the musicians themselves.
