A Child Alone

This book is based on my true story. It is a memoir of a very tragic time in my life. It is about my mother's relationship with a man who was very abusive to both of us. I suffered countless beatings and psychological trauma from my experience with him. It still affects me to this day, and this novella is a reflection of that time. It was not the last time I was ever abused, but it is the time that has stayed with me throughout my entire adult life.EXCERPT:"I'm sorry." I replied.I grabbed the shirttail of my Spiderman pajama tops and twisted them nervously around my finger.Tony laughed loudly and grabbed me by the wrist. He yanked me over to where he was standing and slapped me hard across the face. I was too much in shock from the blow to cry, but my ears started ringing. They actually still ring from time to time to this day.I tried to run away from Tony, but that only made it worse. His grip on my wrist tightened and the blows went from open-handed to close-fisted. At that point, I cried to my mother to make it stop, but she just stood there and watched the whole thing, shaking her head from side to side. I left Tony's apartment that evening with a bruised wrist, a black eye and a hollow feeling in my heart that no child should ever have to feel. That was when I realized that there was no one around to protect me anymore. My grandmother was gone, and my mom was Tony's. I belonged to no one. It was me against the rest of the world.
