Chinese Warlord Armies 1911–30

This book is the first detailed, illustrated study of one of the most exotic military environments of the 20th century. Following the overthrow of the Manchu Empire in 1911, China broke up into a jigsaw of fiefdoms ruled by 'warlords' who by the early 1930s had fought hundreds of separate conflicts. Some involved private armies of very modest size; but others saw large alliances put hundreds of thousands of men into the field, armed with the most modern equipment available, advised by foreign mercenaries, and supported by armoured trains and aircraft. Philip Jowett was born in Leeds in 1961, and has been interested in military history for as long as he can remember. His first Osprey book was the ground-breaking MAA 306 Chinese Civil War Armies 1911-49; he has since published a three-part sequence on The Italian Army 1940-45 (MAA 340, 349 & 353). A rugby league enthusiast and amateur genealogist, he is married and lives in Lincolnshire.
