Truth is stranger than fiction. This old adage certainly applies to the schooners and steamers of Newfoundland and Labrador, and to the men that sailed them. Countless ships and sailors came to grief in Newfoundland and Labrador waters in the days before long-range forecasting and reliable navigational instruments. Anything that could conceivably have happened to a ship has happened along the shores of Canada's most easterly province.
