Contested State Identities And Regional Security in the Euro-mediterranean Area

"Focusing on the first seven years of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (EMP), Del Sarto stresses the importance of domestic factors as an impediment to the emergence of regional security schemes. Thus far, explanations of the difficulties encountered by the EMP since its inception in 1995 have pointed to the flawed design of the project, cultural differences across the Mediterranean, and the fallout from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This study argues that domestic conflicts over the preferred identity of the state constrain the ability and desire of governments to engage in region-building on a Euro-Mediterranean basis. Thus, states cannot adopt a regional identity as a basis of regional security until they have sorted out their domestic identity conflicts."--BOOK JACKET.
