Lieutenant William Pittenger (1840-1904) was an American soldier, pastor and author. He volunteered to be a member of a raiding party and he intended to serve in the Union Army but bad health forced him to leave the military. He became a theology student and took various pastoral positions in Methodist and Episcopal churches in the east. His works include: Oratory: Sacred and Secular (1868), Capturing a Locomotive (1885), Toasts and Forms of Public Address (1900) and Daring and Suffering: A History of the Great Railroad Adventure (1863).
