In his etymologies, Isidore of Sevilla compiled the knowledge of the ancient world that was extant in 600 A.D. Clothing and fabrics were a key topic in these etymologies. Approximately 450 years later this knowledge appeared in revised form in the Summarium Heinrici, the most important teaching and reference work of the Middle Ages. Under the rubric of clothing readers are offered primary source material as well as German translations, critical commentary, and overview discussions. The work thus provides a starting point for future scholarship concerning the other areas of life discussed in Isidore of Sevilla's etymologies.
