Day of the Dead, or Día de Muertos in Spanish, is a happy celebration. The Mexican holiday is a time to welcome back loved ones who are no longer with us. This is done with offerings of favorite foods, brightly colored marigolds, sugar skulls, and more. Mirelle Ortega is a Mexican author/illustrator for kidlit and animation based in Los Angeles, California. She’s best known for receiving the 2023 Pura Belpré Award Honor for illustration on her debut picture book MAGIC, ONCE UPON A FARAWAY LAND.
