Edward Lytton Wheeler (1854-1885) was an American author. He was the creator of the adventures of Deadwood Dick series. He was born in Avoca, New York. In 1877 his first novelette Hurricane Nell: The Girl Dead-Shot; or, The Queen of the Saddle and Lasso was published as No. 1 of Starr's Ten Cent Pocket Library. Deadwood Dick appeared in a series of stories, or "dime novels," published between 1877 and 1897. The name became so widely known in its time that it was used to advantage by several men who actually resided in Deadwood, South Dakota. Wheeler also ran a theatrical company for a short while during 1880. His other works include: Wild Edna: The Girl Bandit (1877) and The Border Bloodhounds (1877).
