Decolonization

When the United Nations was created in 1945, large areas of the world functioned as colonies, controlled by powerful faraway countries. The founders of the United Nations believed that all people should have the right to choose how they were governed. One of the major goals of the new organization was to give all these territories the chance to decide for themselves whether they would become an independent nation or remain under the rule of another country.
