Deep Postmodernism Whitehead, Wittgenstein, Merleau-Ponty, and Polanyi

Postmodernism is a term used to describe a contemporary school of philosophy that takes a highly critical stance toward the conceptual underpinnings of the modern worldview. In this critical assessment of postmodernism, philosopher Jerry H. Gill points out that, however insightful the postmodernist critiques have been, they have done little or nothing in the way of offering constructive approaches to overcoming the impasse created by their objections to modernism. Gill turns to an earlier generation of twentieth-century philosophers who not only anticipated later postmodern trends but offered valuable alternative approaches to the dilemmas of modernism regarding the nature of reality, knowledge, and language.

Jerry H. Gill is adjunct professor of philosophy and humanities at Pima Community College. Previously, he was professor of philosophy and religion at the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York; Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania; and Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. He is the author of many other books, including Native American Worldviews, Wittgenstein and Metaphor, and Merleau-Ponty and Metaphor.
