Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan is as alive, but also as controversial, today as it was the day it was published. Carl Schmitt has been termed the "Hobbes of the 20th century." He himself likes to see himself as the successor and heir to the founder of social contract theory. In Hobbes-Kristall, Schmitt's idiosyncratic Hobbesian interpretation becomes clearly evident, and the microcosm of Schmittian thinking becomes visible.
