The core topic of this volume is formed by the fundamental redefinition of the guild, the largest social group of the medieval city. The author examines their emergence and change, and shows that medieval guilds included commercial enterprises and brotherhoods, as well as political and military units. Using Strasbourg as an example, all four areas will be thoroughly investigated for the first time, and the results compared to Zurich, Nuremberg, and Frankfurt. Using social questioning and a prosopographic approach combined with methods of network analysis, the author proves that guilds represented highly mobile and dynamic groups. This provides a whole new image of guilds, which were a fundamental element of pre-modern society. German text.
