A practical guide for emerging theatre directors to forging a career in contemporary theatre. Theatre directing is one of the most open professions to enter with no formal qualifications required. This book answers the key questions for new entrants -'Where do I begin? How can I put on a piece of work that will be professionally recognised?' - alongside analysis of the director's role through the key relationships with the actor, the author, the designer, the production manager and creative producer. A vital handbook with plenty of advice for 'on-the-job' situations where there is little available information outside professional experience and training. Each chapter will * introduce key theories, practitioners and reading to provide an overview of historic and current practice * contain interviews with leading practitioners and recently emerged directors * suggest exercises to develop the director's own approach and practical skills. The book does focus on any particular acting methodology, theatre genre or aesthetic, but provides an overview of the myriad of approaches so that the director can develop their own unique methods of working. An inside view of the profession that no emerging director should be without.

Rob Swain is a theatre director and has been the artistic and associate director of several theatre companies. He is the programme director of the MFA Theatre Directing at Birkbeck College and a member of the National Council for Drama Training, accrediting drama school programmes across the UK.
