Displacement Beyond Conflict

Climate change, accelerating environmental degradation, rapid industrialization and intensifying competition over the world's resources is creating population displacement on an unprecedented scale, resulting in serious societal conflict. One estimate claims there will be 1 billion forcibly displaced people by 2050. It is recognized that the causes of human displacement are interlinked with common roots in bad government, lack of democracy, human rights violations, poverty and extreme pressure on and poor management of the environment. Examining the causes and consequences and options available for addressing the dramatic rise in the numbers of displaced people, this volume considers the effects on human rights, protection and material needs of displaced people and how well or not - national governments, international agencies and civil society address these needs.
