Doing News Framing Analysis: Empirical and Theoretical Perspectives

Doing News Framing Analysis provides an interpretive guide to news frames-what they are, how framing effects are uncovered and substantiated in cultural, group, and individual sites. Chapters feature framing analysts reflecting on their own empirical work in research, classroom, and public settings to address specific aspects of framing analysis. Taken together, the collection covers the full range of ways in which framing has been theorized and applied-across topics, sources, mechanisms, and effects.

Paul D'Angelo (PhD, Temple University) is an assistant professor of mass media and political communication at The College of New Jersey. His research on theories and effects of news framing in political campaign settings, both within the United States and in comparative perspectives, has appeared in American Behavioral Scientist, Journal of Communication, Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics, and the Atlantic Journal of Communication. His work on the disciplinary historiography of political communication has appeared in Mass Communication and Society and Communication Yearbook. Jim A. Kuypers (PhD, Louisiana State University) is an assistant professor of political communication at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is the author or co-author of six books, including Press Bias and Politics: How the Media Frame Controversial Issues, and Bush's War: Media Bias and Justifications for War in the Terrorist Age. He is a former co-editor for the American Communication Journal. He is the recipient of the American Communication Association's Outstanding Contribution to Communication Scholarship Award, the Southern States Communication Association's Early Career Research Award, and Dartmouth College's Distinguished Lecturer Award. His research interests include political communication, meta-criticism, and the moral/poetic use of language.
