One of the key sources of Mel Gibson's film, The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ is the record of the visions of Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824), a German nun who displayed the stigmata. Her narrative of the crucifixion is both more violent and detailed than the version recorded in the Gospels. Influenced by Medieval depictions of the Passion, EmmerichÆs version is both disturbing and beautiful. Discover the source of the controversy for yourself.
