Explores the psychological and strategic ecosystems of modern political violence and suggest how America can deal with them. Combines analysis with historical examples drawn from America's involvement with armed struggle in places such as Lebanon and Vietnam, and argues that the conventional, rational approach to military and policy establishment must be tempered with historical understanding and empathy. The author is a professor in the school of public and international affairs at Columbia University.
