In the 1320's AD the Emperor Constantine moved the capital of his Empire fromome to Byzantium, which was renamed Conatantinople, and until its fall in453 remained a major artistic centre. Under successive emperors andmpresses for more than a thousand years, artists, archtects and craftsmenroduced superb and intriguing works ranging fom the grandest publicuildings to the smallest and most personal items. Today this art isenerally termed early Christian and Byzantine.;Working from the survivingaterial this work explains how and why early Christian and Byzantine art wasade and used.
