Socioeconomic structures in China have altered dramatically since Deng Xiaoping promoted the policy of "Reform and Opening Up" in 1978. This collection explores social ramifications of the drive towards a more market-oriented economy.

Arthur Sweetman is director of the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University. Canada, where he holds the Stauffer-Dunning Chair. Jun Zhang is Cheung Kong Professor of Economics and director of the China Center for Economic Studies at Fudan University in Shanghai, China.
