Effective Counselling With Young People

This book examines key theoretical counselling perspectives and applies these specifically to work with young people. It establishes how to build counselling relationships in order to support young people and enable them to achieve positive outcomes and to manage their lives effectively. It also identifies the key counselling skills needed to engage in purposeful, helping conversations. There are sections on understanding adolescent development, exploring person-centred principles and understanding and using motivational interviewing - all of which help to blend academic theory with the realities of practice.

Hazel Reid is principal lecturer and Director of the Centre for Career Personal Development at Canterbury Christ Church University. She teaches on a range of programmes associated with youth support; including a Foundation degree programme, a BA( Hons) award and the Masters in Career Guidance and Counselling. She also supports colleagues working on Doctoral degrees. Jane Westergaard is a senior lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University. She teaches or a range of programmes specifically designed for students who plan to engage in employment with young people, but not in teaching roles. These youth support professionals include school counsellors, pastoral tutors, voluntary sector youth support workers, classroom assistants, learning mentors, careers advisers and personal advisers. Norman Claringbull is former Head of Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies at Southampton University. He currently combines his commercial consultancy work and private practice with ongoing research and various academic appointments at a number of UK universities.
