The French director Max Ophüls chose the three stories that make up this book in 1952 to create a beautiful film, The Pleasure. With brief but exact brushstrokes, irony, and an excellent ability to observe reality, a narrative is embodied where the characters, often people that Maupassant himself had known, appear as unforgettable creatures who, struck by the ups and downs of the passion, are portrayed with humanity and humor.

Guy de Maupassant is considered one of the fathers of the modern short story. He was a popular French writer and the protégé of Gustave Flaubert. His best known works are Bel-Ami, "Boule de Suif," Des Vers, Mademoiselle Fifi, Pierre et Jean, and Une Vie.
