1875. Whately, Archbishop of Dublin, treatise on Logic comprising the substance of the article in the Encyclopedia Metropolitana. De Morgan wrote in 1860 that Whately had restored the study of logic in England. Whateley's achievement was not so much in logic as in moral metalogic; he explained what logicians should have been doing.... Logic, said Whateley, is entirely conversant about language, and it is only as reasoning is expressed in language that logic can study it. The Contents are divided into the following four books: Analytical Outline of the Science; Sythnthetical Compendium; Of Fallacies; and Dissertation on the Province of Reasoning.
