Etienne Dolet : Carmina (1538)

English summary: Etienne Dolet (1508-1546), humanist, philologist and free-thinker, is renowned for his tragic death at the stake. His poetic works, in Neo-Latin and in French, sank into oblivion. Yet he composed many poems, between 1534 and 1542, to celebrate the birth of his son Claude (Genethliacum Claudii Doleti) or to pay tribute to Francois 1st's acts (Francisci Valesii Gallorum Regis Fata). Dolet also published a collection of epigrams, in 1538, entitled Carmina. Besides its poetic interest linked to the fashion of the epigrammatic genre in France in the 1530s, this work enables the reader to discover some aspects of a multi-faceted writer, an atypical poet who sometimes moralizes, sometimes gets keenly involved in controversy on the question of style or on the French-Italian rivalry; he also sometimes rashly shows his skepticism about faith. The present edition adopts the text of the collection chosen by the author in 1538 and proposes a translation preceded by a study dedicated to its poetics. French text. Ses oeuvres poetiques, en neo-latin et en francais, sont restees dans l'oubli. Pourtant, il composa maints poemes, entre 1534 et 1542, pour celebrer la naissance de son fils Claude (Le Genethliacum Claudii Doleti) ou rendre hommage a la geste de Francois 1er (Les Francisci Valesii Gallorum Regis Fata). Dolet publia aussi un recueil d'epigrammes, en 1538, intitule les Carmina. Outre son interet poetique lie a la vogue du genre epigrammatique en France dans les annees 1530, cet ouvrage permet au lecteur de decouvrir quelques aspects d'un auteur aux multiples facettes, poete un peu atypique qui joue les moralistes a ses heures et n'hesite pas a polemiquer aprement sur la question du style ou sur la rivalite franco-italienne, tout en montrant imprudemment son scepticisme en matiere de foi. La presente edition adopte le texte du recueil voulu par l'auteur en 1538 et en propose une traduction precedee d'une etude consacree a sa poetique.
