Politics and economics of European nations, but also of its citizens, will increasingly be influenced by decisions at the European level. Even though the needs of its citizens has been a point of discussion since the 1970's, Europe suffers from a lack of acceptance, especially since the collapse of the constitution in 2005. The extension of powers of the European Parliament, the creation of symbols of identification, and the removal of barriers all aim to close the gap between European institutions and civil society in hopes of creating a Europe for citizens. The author traces the path of these developments and asks to what extent we can truly speak today of a Europe for citizens. The Citizen Project on a European level, as it has evolved rapidly on a political level since 1972, is placed in the context of Europe's tumultuous history of the 19th and 20th centuries. German text.
