Experiences in Math for Young Children

Experiences in Math for Young Children focuses on the integration of mathematics with other content areas in accordance with the guidelines and standards of NCTM and NAEYC. Developed specifically for educators of children from birth through age eight, particular emphasis has been placed on instructional and evaluation strategies as well as developmentally appropriate assessment tasks to fit the national movement calling for authentic assessment. Each math concept is presented in a web that provides a picture of how it might be integrated with music and movement, language and visual arts, science, and social students. Problem solving is stressed as an integral part of constructing concepts with a balance of naturalistic, informal, and structured activities and experiences. A wealth of resources gives educators further tools for helping young children master mathematic skills. These include guidance in establishing learning centers, Web sites for further reading, active approaches to mathematics, parental involvement efforts, and lists of children's books promoting math concepts.
