This is a historical novel about a mulatto son and his white father, The General, who fight together in the Confederate Army under Lee during the whole war, and then fight against each other in the Reconstruction era of South Carolina. The black boy is based on a real historical figure, the General is not, but the names are changed to keep from slurring the memory of the General. Real places and real names are used, but the situations are fictional and entirely the product of the author.
