FDR and the Environment

When one thinks of the New Deal era, the issue of the environment does not immediately come to mind. Yet New Deal policies had a huge impact on environmental thinking, defining a new role for the federal government in the scientific management of the natural environment.

David Woolner is Assistant Professor of History and Political Science at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and Executive Director of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute. Henry L. Henderson is President of Policy Solutions Ltd., an environmental consulting firm based in Chicago, and is Senior Lecturer in Environmental Studies at the University of Chicago.
