Feminist Media History Suffrage, Periodicals and the Public Sphere

Highlighting the contributions of feminist media history to media studies and related disciplines, this book focuses on feminist periodicals emerging from or reacting to the Edwardian suffrage campaign and situates them in the context of current debates about the public sphere, social movements, and media history.

Maria DiCenzo is Associate Professor of English and Film Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada. She has published on feminist media history and the British suffrage press in journals such as Media History, Women's History Review, Victorian Review, and Nineteenth Century Gender Studies. Lucy Delap is a Fellow of St Catharine's College and a member of the History Faculty, University of Cambridge, UK. Her 2007 book The Feminist Avant-Garde: Transatlantic Encounters of the Early Twentieth Century won the 2008 Women's History Network Prize, and she has published widely on the history of feminism in Britain and North America. She has also co-edited, with DiCenzo and Ryan, the primary source reader, Feminism and the Periodical Press, 1900-1918. Leila Ryan holds a Graduate School appointment as an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at McMaster University, Canada. She has published in the areas of health policy and health services as well as on Canadian biography in the Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature.
