This study deals with Schleiermachera (TM)s political activity during all phases of his life and work. Using a broad range of sources, some of them new, it examines his political sermons, his activity in educational and university politics, his theoretical notions of the state, his collaboration in political journalistic activity within the Prussian Reform Party (Der PreuAische Correspondent) and his judgement on Judaism and Jewish culture. Schleiermacher presents himself as a programmatic supporter of a liberal civil society formed by citizens.
