Ukiyo-e painting offers a fascinating glimpse of the culture of the floating world, a world of actors and courtesans and elegant pastimes which flourished in Edo, the vibrant capital of Japan. During the Edo period (1600-1868) numerous artists recorded every aspect of this colorful scene in scroll paintings.

The collection of the Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art, assembled by Kikumatsu Imanishi, provides a representative overview of Ukiyo-e painting: it contains paintings by such important masters as Nishikawa Sukenobu, Hosoda Eishi, Katsushika Hokusai, and Kawanabe Kyosai, and a series of works by artists of the Utagawa school.
