George Washington's Socks

A magical rowboat transports five adventurous kids back in time to the eve of the Battle at Trenton where they get a first-hand lesson on the American Revolution. Through encounters with Hessian soldiers, revolutionaries, and even George Washington himself, Matthew, Quentin, Hooter, Tony, and Katie watch history unfold before their eyes as they see first-hand the grim realities of war and learn the cost of their freedom.

Elvira Woodruff was born in New Jersey, where most of the Revolution was fought. She has always loved history, and once, while tubing down the Delaware River, she began thinking about what it might have been like on Christmas Eve of 1776. Being a pacifist, she wrote George Washington's Socks for her son Noah, who is very fond of G.I. Joe. While writing, she herself discovered the horrors of war, but also came to understand the strength and courage of those who fought. Besides spending her time writing, Elvira Woodruff visits schools and gives presentations on the Revolutionary War and on writing historical fiction. Formerly a children's librarian and a professional storyteller, Ms. Woodruff lives in Martin's Creek, Pennsylvania, where she's raising her two sons.
