Glenn Brown

Billed as "The Thinking Man's painter" by the New York Times, Glenn Brown has been lauded for his strong technical style and clever resampling of other famous works. This extraordinary book, made in collaboration with the artist and the Gagosian Gallery, is the first to examine the full scope of Brown's artistic development over the last few decades. Lavishly illustrated with images from his body of work, this book will also include a selection of essays from Rochelle Steiner, Michael Bracewell, and David Freedberg as they explore the ways through which the artist has grasped his times with a desire to examine and pervert the existing thicknesses of history, to recollect an open-ended mesh of references to painting and cultural history, past and present.

Glenn Brown was born in Northumberland, England, in 1966 and studied at the Norwich School of Art, the Bath College of Higher Education, and Goldsmiths College, London. His work has been shown at the Serpentine Gallery, London (2004), Museum of Contemporary Arts, Los Angeles (2005), Biennale di Venezia (2003), and Centre d’art contemporain, France (2000). Rochelle Steiner is the former director of the Public Art Fund. Michael Bracewell is a British writer, novelist, and social commentator. David Freedberg is an art history professor and director at Columbia University, New York.
