On Global Order Power, Values, and the Constitution of International Society

How is the world organized politically? What forms of international political organization are required to deal with such problems as climate change, nuclear proliferation or the management of globalization? Drawing on work in International Relations, International Law and Global Governance, this book aims to provide a clear and wide-ranging introduction to the analysis of global political order. Connecting classical arguments with contemporary theories, it explores the fate of international society in an era of globalization and asks how it has confronted its three most fundamental challenges: the promotion of common interest; the management of unequal power; and the mediation of diversity and conflicting values. Andrew Hurrell is Director of the Centre for International Studies at Oxford University and a Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford. He has written extensively on international institutions and governance at both the global and regional levels and on the role of major developing countries in contemporary international relations. Previous publications include: co-editor with Ngaire Woods, Inequality, Globalization and World Politics (1999); and co-editor with Rosemary Foot and John Gaddis, Order and Justice in International Relations (2003).
