Global Perspectives on Fundraising New

The significance of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), philanthropy, and volunteerism in other nations is growing. This volume offers a sampling of what is happening in fundraising on an international scale. Chapter authors from several different regions address a range of questions, including: the current status of the NGOs or nonprofit sector in their area, the cultural and religious roots of charity and philanthropy, contemporary practices in fundraising, who are the donors and what are their motivations, and the future of fundraising and philanthropy in their area. Geographic regions examined include Mexico and Central America, Brazil and Argentina, Canada, Western Europe, New Zealand, Central Asia, and the Philippines. This volume illustrations how international understanding can enrich the global community of fundraising practitioners and how we are truly part of a global system and therefore fortunate to share in a vast network of knowledge and the knowledgeable who make it happen. This is the 46th volume of the quarterly report series New Directions for Philanthropic Fundraising.

Lilya Wagner is associate director of the public service division of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University and director of the Women's Philanthropy Institute. She is coeditor of New Directions in Philanthropic Fundraising.

This chapter questions the readiness of NGOs in the Arab world to do formal fundraising and provides an answer through the example of a nongovernmental organization in Lebanon that is actively engaged in seeking funds for its cause.

8. Nongovernmental organizations and fundraising: Why people equals power (Marianne G. Quebral)

Philippine NGOs are realizing they need to stop talking just among themselves and start listening to the constituencies they serve. Fundraising is driving this process and is strengthening organizations critical to Philippine society’s well-being.

9. New challenges to the third sector in a welfare state (Lisa Wells)

The establishment of the Charities Commission for New Zealand is more about meeting the needs of the state than the sector. What will this mean to an interdependent relationship and the growth of an independent third sector?

10. Philanthropy and fundraising in Western Europe within a framework of change (Helmut Heinzel)
