It was the year of 1932. The Great Depression had laid its heavy hand on the land, pressing many families close to starvation. Johnny knew that bringing a stray dog home with him was the last thing he should do, but he couldn't turn away the shaggy white dog with the wildly waving tail, green paint splashed carelessly on his side. As Johnny's mother is forced into ever more stringent privations, Johnny and his friend Kenneth must come up with inventive ways to feed and house Paint. When the two boys suspect a local dropout of killing their teacher, they must do what they can to bring him to justice, triggering events that will test the bond between a boy and the dog who ultimately saves his life. Goodbye, Old Paint was written by R. L. Blackledge, an avid outdoorsman who grew up in Sheridan Wyoming at the time depicted in the novel.
