Gradus An Integrated Approach to Harmony, Counterpoint, and Analysis: The First Year

Integrates the materials of harmony, counterpoint, and analysis; helps develop musicianship along with intellectual skills; presents the study of theory within a stylistic and historical framework; derives basic principles from the music examples in the text and in the generous Anthology; proceeds in an organized way from the study of progressions and phrases to the analysis of complete pieces; examines a wide range of music from plain chant to contemporary works, including a good representation of American music; and extensively tested and proven in the classroom.

Leo Kraft, composer, author, and teacher is professor emeritus of music at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College of the City University of New York. Gradus grew directly out of the pioneering program he instituted there. Kraft is also the author of A New Approach to Ear Training, one of the trio who wrote A New Approach to Sight Singing, and a member of the quintet who created A New Approach to Keyboard Harmony.
