This book offers an accessible, comprehensive account of the multifaceted Greek literature of the Roman Empire, focusing especially on the first three centuries AD. It covers in turn the Greek novels of this period, the satirical writing of Lucian, rhetoric, philosophy, scientific and miscellanistic writing, geography and history, biography and poetry. Jason König provides a vivid introduction to key texts, with extensive quotation in translation, and looks beyond the most commonly studied authors to reveal the full richness of this period's literature.

Jason König is Senior Lecturer in Greek and Classical Studies, University of St Andrews. His publications include Athletics and Literature in the Roman Empire (2005) and Ordering Knowledge in the Roman World (jointly edited with Tim Whitmarsh) (2007) as well as a wide range of articles on the Greek literature and culture of the Roman world.
