Peter Rose has spent a lifetime exploring patterns of culture, examining issues of race and ethnicity, working with refugees, teaching sociology, and roaming the world.
Guest Appearances and Other Travels in Time and Space introduces us to many of those whom Rose has met along the way, a cast of characters as colorful as it is diverse. It includes his music-loving mother; his tour guides in China, Germany, and Israel; the Indochinese refugees he followed to the United States; the notorious murderer Nathan Leopold; the simple tailor Mr. David; and three writers for whom Rose has a special affinity: Jerre Mangione, Philip Roth, and John Updike.

Peter I. Rose is Sophia Smith Professor of Sociology and Anthropology and Senior Fellow of the Kahn Liberal Arts Institute at Smith College.
