Appropriate "green" technologies are sometimes regarded as a second-rate solution but the three volumes of "Hands On" challenges this concept by presenting real-life examples of successful viable alternatives to demonstrate appropriate technological stories from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. All of the stories included have been produced as a result of personal experience from somewhere in the world. Subjects covered include success stories from agriculture, agro-processing, enterprise, energy, building and shelter, water and sanitation. "Hands On" promotes appropriate technologies and environmentally sound solutions which can help reduce consumption. All of the new technologies and scientific breakthroughs described can be readily applied by individuals at a reasonable cost to themselves and to the community. Some of the initiatives can be applied in the home while others can be used by entrepreneurs to stimulate green business and small-scale enterprise. While the intention of "Hands On" is to promote affordable and replicable technologies, there are a number of large scale 'industrial' examples and experimental initiatives which are clearly beyond the reach of individuals. These are intended to stimulate the interest of, and encourage the investment by, big business. The material for this book has been taken from the first "Hands On" series of short video films prepared by the Television Trust for the Environment.
