Alma Woodson grew up in the Appalachian and coalfield mountains of Southwest Virginia. Throughout her teenage years she couldn't wait until the day she graduated from Garden High School and could escape. She and her sister Janice moved to Washington D.C. and she discovered the thrill and convenience of the big cities. Working in politics brought her into contact with powerful and influential people, including presidents. When her father died and she learned she was the executor of his estate, she found mysteries and stories in his files that had to be investigated. Her younger sister Krista tried to convince her to retire and move back to Buchanan County and 'rediscover her roots'. Could Alma abandon the glamorous and convenient life of the Nation's capital and move back to the coalfields of Hanger?
