Born in Brazil, Dr. David P. Appleby had a long career studying and performing the music of Heitor Villa-Lobos. Appleby was one of five Americans honored with the Villa-Lobos Centennial Medal by the Brazilian government in 1988 for his research and performances of the music of Brazil's most notable composer. The recipient of three Fulbright teaching and research grants in Brazil, Appleby is the author of Music of Brazil; Heitor Villa-Lobos: A Bio-Bibliography; and several editions of Brazilian music, including A prole do bebe no. 1 by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Brazilian Tangos and Dances by Ernesto Nazareth Recently elected as one of four American corresponding members of the Brazilian Academy of Music, Appleby has retired to Texas and continues his lifelong passion for the music of Brazil
