Herculaneum

In 79 A.D. an unprecedented natural disaster struck Herculaneum. The eruption of Vesuvius is, seen in today's light, a great fluke for archeology, because large areas of the city were conserved for research. Andrew Wallace-Hadrill explains archaeological remains from architecture and urban living, and takes a close look upon the daily life in the city. By evaluating the findings, as well as the written sources, he draws a picture of the bustling activity within the city. Aspects like the structure of the population, private and public areas, comparisons with neighboring Pompeji and the role of the city within the roman empire are analysed. Along with rich images, detailed plans, sketches and illustrations this book creates a vivid picture of Herculaneum.
