This work is a comparative study of the writings and strategies of European women in two colonies, French Algeria and British Kenya, during the 20th century. Its central theme is women's discursive contribution to the construction of colonial nostalgia, which author Patricia Lorcin argues, was not a post-independence phenomenon but one that was embedded in the colonial period. In fact, women's writing developed the themes, patterns, and tropes that constitute the colonial nostalgia of the post-independence period.
