Shanghai or Seattle, Bombay or Brisbane, the modern history of a distant continent continues to mould important features of human life in these and innumerable other places around the world. Europe's influence has been tranformative far beyond its frontiers and 'global' society today is to an important degree a European society. Whether that is welcome or not (and frequently it is not), understanding Europe's history is a key to far broader horizons of understanding. This new history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Europe, by one of the leading historians in the field, offers an explanation of the continent's spectacular rise and then near 'suicide'. He writes with authority on those two secular religions - nationalism and communism - that were such central elements of the 'suicidal' trends of modern European history. But he is interested in more than ideologies or structural changes or other impersonal forces. Unlike much recent historical writing, he readmits the individual as an important agent of change.
Albert S. Lindemann is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Among his publications are Antisemitism, A History (2010), Esau's Tears: Modern Anti-Semitism and the Rise of the Jews (1997), The Jew Accused: Three Anti-Semitic Affairs (1992), and A History of European Socialism (1983).
